The Challenge
The Rivers Casino development, located on the North Shore between the Carnegie Science Center and the West End Bridge, is Pittsburgh’s first casino. Chester Engineers served as the civil/site design engineer for Bergman, Walls & Associates, Ltd., the owner, and local sub-consultants to provide the following engineering services:
- Environmental investigations to determine the suitability of on-site soils for use and to determine health and safety protocols
- Traffic studies and roadway design; coordination with PennDOT and Allegheny County
- Demolition services (existing facilities above and below ground)
- Site grading
- Erosion and sediment control permitting
- NPDES-post construction storm water permitting
- Chapter 105 riverfront environmental permitting
The Interdisciplinary Approach
With construction of a very large project in an urban area and with the bulk of Chester’s work underground/subsurface, close coordination with the Architect, MEP engineer, utility companies and permitting agencies was required.
The Sustainable Result
Chester’s approach to the design was focused on minimizing environmental impacts, water conservation, compliance, environmental stewardship, sustainability, and cost savings considerations. The sustainable result is a world class gaming facility constructed magnificently along the rivers in Pittsburgh that benefits from a well planned utility infrastructure, site work design and environmental enhancements.
