Mercury Emission Testing Studies

Client:US Department of Energy (DOE)
Location:Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

Chester Engineers was contracted by the US-Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct studies on mercury emission testing methodologies to determine appropriate methods for compliance monitoring and testing of air emissions.

Scope of Work
Chester Engineers was commissioned by DOE to carry out the following tasks:

  • Evaluate the emission reports of the five primary contractors to determine the utility of the sampling and analytical methods employed.
  • Evaluate sampling methods determined to be deficient by information collected in completing the above objective and conduct method development studies.
  • Provide QA/QC Audits of Phase II emission studies by other contractors.

Additional assignments included:

  1. Determined mercury sampling methods employed were deficient in offering speciation data;
  2. Developed improved sampling methods deemed capable of speciating mercury in bench scale experiments;
  3. Performed pilot scale trials with these methods at the DOE-FETC 500 lb/hr combustion unit;
  4. Published results from experiments performed to improve mercury speciation sampling methods, and
  5. Attended DOE-EPRI-EPA Joint Mercury Workshop to present results from current mercury speciation methods developmental work.

ASTM Designation

  • The developed methodology was adopted by the ASTM.
