System Rehabilitation Design And Construction Services

Client:Bethel Park Municipal Authority
Location:Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

The homes and sanitary sewer system in the Ruthfred Acres area of Bethel Park were built in the 1950's. In recent years, internal sewer line television inspections as well as visual inspections of the sewer system have revealed that many sections of the sewer lines are in poor condition. Heavy groundwater infiltration and inflow have been identified and much of the system is root infested. During the mid 1990's, the Bethel Park Municipal Authority (Authority) identified the Ruthfred Acres area as a prime area for rehabilitation. During 1996, approximately one-third of the Ruthfred Acres area (Phase I) was replaced by the Authority at a cost of approximately $500,000. Another one-third of the Ruthfred Acres area (Phase II) was identified and funded for study and rehabilitation under the 3 Rivers Wet Weather Demonstration Program (3RWWDP). The Ruthfred Acres Phase II Rehabilitation Project consisted of the following elements:

  • Completion of pre-construction flow and precipitation monitoring
  • Completion of sewer system rehabilitation work elements consisting of:
  • Pipe bursting 4,478 feet of vitrified clay pipe with HDPE pipe
  • Replacement of 31 manholes
  • Replacement of 58 lateral sewers from the collector sewer to the edge or the sewer rights-of-way and installation of 58 lateral sewer inspection ports
  • Dye testing 64 properties
  • Inspection of lateral inspection ports to evaluate wet weather flow contributions
  • Complete post-construction flow monitoring (rainfall data was obtained using the 3RWWDP's calibrated rainfall radar data).
