Runway 13-31 Renovation Allegheny County Airport
The scope of the exploration and analysis included subsurface exploration, field and laboratory testing, engineering analysis and evaluation of the subgrade materials. During the sampling operations, standard penetration tests (SPT) were performed at pre-determined intervals in order to obtain the standard penetration value of the soil. Water level depths were obtained during the test boring operations. Field California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Tests were performed on materials obtained from each test boring. The test borings revealed the depth to bedrock to be relatively shallow. This fact indicated that the study portion of the runway was probably cut at the time of original construction, circa 1939. Also, an apparent perched water table occurs in this portion of the runway. Because the proposed design for the pavement structural section will be on the order of 27 inches thick, a major portion of the existing pavement structural section will have to be removed nearly to bedrock. High CBR values indicated required modifications to initial design recommendations. Key Project Services
