Water Distribution System Hydraulic Model

Project Objective:
Provide Cranberry Township with an up-to-date, accurate, and reliable computer modeling tool that can be used to analyze the performance of the water system under various conditions and integrate the computer model with the Township's geographic information system (GIS) so that the model can be kept up to date and synchronized with actual system conditions as reflected in the Township's GIS.


Solution:
Chester updated an existing model of the water system using recently acquired data describing the system as contained in the Township's geographic information system (GIS) using Haestad Methods' WaterCAD water distribution system modeling software. Chester, updated the modeled demands based upon current billing data, tested, and verified the model. The model was assembled and calibrated to reflect the performance of the Municipal Authority of the Borough of West View's water system that supplies Cranberry Township. The model input files were synchronized to the Township's GIS and standard operating procedures were developed to be used to periodically synchronize the model input files with GIS as Township maintains its GIS to reflect changes to the water distribution system. This process insures that the model is kept current and viable in spite of Cranberry Township's rapid rate of development.

Chester routinely uses the computer model as a integral tool used by Cranberry Township as it copes with the rapid development that the Township is experiencing. The model is frequently used to evaluate developer proposed local distribution system designs and assess the impact of proposed developments on the overall operation of the Township's water distribution system. The model is also used to conduct computer simulated fire hydrant flow tests as a means of rapidly and economically responding to developers' requests for such tests to support their designs of distribution and fire protection systems.
