 Water Distribution System Hydraulic Model
Project Objective: Provide the Harrisburg Authority with a computer modeling tool that can be used to describe and evaluate the performance of their system, assess the effects of changing conditions, and test the effectiveness of water system improvements. Solution: Phase I of this project consisted of converting a 1986 vintage model to a newer, more capable version (EPANET) and to revise the skeletonized network contained in the 1986 model to reflect recent improvements. The computer model was bundled with the ArcView geographic information system (GIS) program and a custom interface between the GIS and the EPANET computer model. The bundled GIS and EPANET software significantly improves the ease of use of the model. This interface between the hydraulic model and a fully capable GIS also permits the model output to be displayed in the context of a wide range of base map and GIS data - assisting in the display and interpretation of model output results. Phase II of this project expanded the skeletonized model to include all distribution system mains in the system. This facilitates the routine use of the model, expands the capabilities of the model to consider the effects of smaller mains, and more fully utilizes the capabilities of the model. Also, during Phase II, current water billing data and land use information was analyzed to refine the allocation of water demands throughout the system. This resulted in a spatial distribution of water use that more accurately reflects current conditions. Finally, the model was calibrated and verified using hydrant flow testing flow and pressure data collected in the field. Key Project Features:
